In the second quarter of 2024, the shipment volume of China's smartphone market is approximately 71.58 million units, a year-on-year increase of 8.9%, continuing the growth momentum.
The latest quarterly tracking report on smartphones released by the International Data Corporation (IDC) shows that in the second quarter of 2024, the shipment volume of smartphones in the Chinese market was approximately 71.58 million units, a year-on-year increase of 8.9%, continuing the growth momentum. Under the promotion of manufacturers such as vivo and Huawei, the Android market grew by 11.1% year-on-year. Despite a significant price reduction, demand for Apple's market has improved significantly, but the shipment volume of the iOS market still decreased by 3.1% year-on-year. With lower shipment volumes compared to the same period last year and the arrival of a new round of replacement cycles, the shipment volume of smartphones in the Chinese market in the first half of this year exceeded 140 million units, a year-on-year increase of 7.7%. In the second quarter, vivo topped the shipment volume of smartphones in the Chinese market, and also ranked first in retail sales data in the first half of the year. The hot sales of multiple new products helped vivo to rank first in market share in various price segments such as 1000-2000 yuan, 3000-4000 yuan, and 4000-5000 yuan. The sub-brand iQOO occupies 5.5% of the overall market share, becoming the most successful sub-brand among all manufacturers. After jointly leading the Chinese market in the previous quarter, Huawei ranked second in the second quarter, with a year-on-year growth rate of over 50%. Throughout the first half of the year, Huawei once again became the first in smartphone market shipment with a market share of 17.5%. Although external restrictions continue to tighten, Huawei's supply capacity continues to improve, continuously reducing the gap with Apple in the market above 4000 yuan. OPPO continued to rank in the top three with a market share of 15.7%. Under the AI strategy, OPPO is striving to create more high-quality products for young consumers. The brand new Reno12 series helped OPPO rank first in the market share of 2000-3000 yuan; A3 Pro became one of the best-selling products in the market of 1000-2000 yuan. The timely updates of the Color OS have effectively improved the user experience from the software system level. Honor continues to develop a system-level AI to provide consumers with better AI functional experience. Cooperation with "Yagu" imaging has enabled the new 200 series to rank second in the market share of 2000-3000 yuan; although competitors in the same category continue to increase, X50 remains one of the best-selling models in the market of 1000-2000 yuan, with cumulative shipments exceeding million, helping Honor rank second in this price segment. Market share of high-end smartphones above $600 continues to grow More mid-range consumers are willing to upgrade their consumption and choose flagship products and products with larger storage capacities to extend the replacement cycle, with the market share of high-end smartphones above $600 in the second quarter of China reaching 25.9%, an increase of 2.8 percentage points compared to the same period last year. At the same time, some mid-range consumers affected by the economic environment choose to downgrade their consumption and prefer products that can meet basic needs at lower prices, even refurbished phones. The market share of smartphones in the price range of 200-600 dollars in China in the second quarter was 46.3%, a decrease of 2.8 percentage points year-on-year. Foldable smartphone market continues to grow rapidly In the second quarter of 2024, the foldable smartphone market in China maintained a triple-digit year-on-year growth rate, with a shipment volume of 2.57 million units. With the release of new generation foldable products from more manufacturers and the addition of new foldable product lines from manufacturers such as Honor, it is expected that the foldable smartphone market in the second half of the year in China will continue to grow rapidly, with development better than the global foldable smartphone market. In the second quarter of 2024, Huawei with a market share of 41.7% maintained the first place in the market share; X Fold3 series gained market recognition after solving multiple pain points of foldable smartphones, helping vivo rise to the second place with a market share of 23.1%; although the hot-selling product Magic V2 is about to be replaced, the new product line Magic Flip helped Honor rank third in the second quarter with a market share of 20.9%, becoming the second largest in the vertical foldable market; OPPO gained a market share of 8.4%, ranking fourth, with a market share of third in the vertical foldable market; Samsung ranked fifth with a market share of 3.0%. Guo Tianxiang, research manager of IDC China, pointed out that the performance of China's smartphone market in the first half of this year exceeded expectations and the rebound momentum is good. However, one cannot blindly optimistic about the market development in the second half of this year and the next year. The sluggish economic environment and insufficient consumer confidence still exist, and the beginning of last year's market recovery led to a higher year-on-year shipment volume, indicating that there is limited room for a greater rebound in the market in the second half of this year compared to the first half. The pressure of rising costs will bring more challenges to manufacturers. AI is hard to be the main driving force for consumer replacement in the short term. Performance, imaging, appearance, battery life, and price are still the main factors that consumers consider when choosing smartphones.
